We also are happy to report that our launch was a huge success. We had at least 70 people turn out Thursday, Oct. 29 — a rainy, windy day — to hear our chair, Janet Guildford, HRM Councilor Jennifer Watts and Second World War volunteer Marjorie Lindsay speak to the importance of our project and begin our official fund-raising campaign.
There were many highlights: The Port of Halifax has given us a location for our monument. The Volunteers/Les Bénévoles will be erected at the Halifax Seaport, along Harbourwalk South on the Halifax waterfront. That’s across from the Halifax Port Authority Building and next to the statute, The Emigrant. We have received a lead anonymous $100,000 gift.
We also received excellent media coverage, kicking off with Information Morning. It ran news clips and an interview with Chair Janet Guildford. We also had coverage in Metro Halifax, on Rick Howe’s morning show on 97.5 Radio and on Global and ATV. The ATV piece was particularly touching and featured some of our Second World War volunteers.
