Exciting events are happening for HWHS in the next two weeks
Dear Society Members:
We have two major and very interesting events to tell you about, including our official launch. By now, you should have received your invitation in the mail to our launch next week.
It’s scheduled as a news conference and gathering for our members on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the Halifax Room of City Hall in Halifax. This is the day we will “go public” with our plans and begin an extensive campaign to have our monument in place by the fall of 2017.
We are also delighted to report that we will have several women, who were Second World War volunteers, and their families attending the event. We are so pleased that they have agreed to join us because our monument, The Volunteers/Les Bénévoles, is a tribute to them and the thousands of women who gave untold hours of volunteer service to the war effort.
The second event is a talk by our chair, Janet Guildford of the Halifax Women’s History Society, at the Halifax Central Library on Friday, Nov. 6. “Mother Was Off Winning the War — Halifax Women Volunteers in World War II” will examine the untold story of the contributions made by women in this remarkable chapter of the city’s history. The talk takes place in Room 301 at 11:30 a.m. We hope many of you can join us.
We would like to thank all of you for your continuing support. Your memberships and encouragement have got us to a place where we are now able to enter the public phase of the project. In the next few months, we will be asking artists for their proposals for a monument and engaging in a major fund-raising effort as we move forward. We again thank you so much for your support and for backing our project.
